GMAT Exam Pattern 2027

Updated on

By Atul Harsha, Content Manager

Sixty-four questions in three 45-minute sections make up the GMAT exam pattern, as GMAC confirms. GMAC has announced no change for 2027. It has not published the number of unscored trial questions, the adaptive method or any marks per question. Plan around the confirmed numbers. Do not trust any site that states the unpublished ones as facts.

Two numbers need care. The first is the total. The current GMAT exam is scored out of 805, and the old test was scored out of 800. The second is the question count. The GMAT exam pattern today has 64 questions across three sections, and each section carries equal weight.

What are the total marks in the GMAT exam?

The total marks in the GMAT exam are a scaled score of 205 to 805. They are not a sum of question marks. Totals move in steps of 10, so every total ends in 5. GMAC gives no marks per question. Each section is scored from 60 to 90, and the three sections carry equal weight.

Is the GMAT exam pattern the same online and at a test centre?

Yes. The GMAT exam pattern, timing and scoring are the same online and at a test centre. Only the tools and rules differ. A test centre gives you erasable noteboards. Online, you use a physical whiteboard of up to 12 in x 20 in, or a digital whiteboard. No paper or pen is allowed in either format.

GMAT 2027 Exam Pattern: Section-Wise Details

The GMAT exam pattern has three sections, and each tests a different skill. GMAC lists the section details on its exam content page. The tabs below summarise them.

21 Problem Solving questions with multiple choice answers. They cover arithmetic and elementary algebra. You cannot use a calculator in this section.

The GMAT exam pattern keeps the three sections separate. Your Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights scores are reported on their own, and they combine into the total score. A weak section shows clearly on the Official Score Report.

Can I use a calculator in the GMAT exam?

Only in the Data Insights section, and only the on-screen one. You cannot use a calculator in Quantitative Reasoning or Verbal Reasoning. At a test centre, calculators and writing tools stay in a locker. Practise mental arithmetic and noteboard working for the Quant section.

The GMAT exam has no essay writing section. Integrated Reasoning is no longer a separate section, because Data Insights replaced it. The GMAT 2027 syllabus page lists the content of each section.

GMAT 2027 Questions and Marks Distribution

The GMAT exam pattern has 64 questions, and GMAC gives no marks per question. There is no negative marking and no per-question mark in the published rules. In the GMAT exam pattern, the question counts are the only fixed distribution that GMAC publishes. The total marks, 205 to 805, come from the section scores.

SectionQuestionsQuestion types
Quantitative Reasoning21Problem Solving
Verbal Reasoning23Reading Comprehension, Critical Reasoning
Data Insights20Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Two-Part Analysis

GMAC publishes no split of questions by topic. It also publishes no split by difficulty. If a site gives you a topic-wise count of questions, it is not an official figure. A Data Insights question with several parts gives credit only when every part is correct. There is no partial credit.

Is the GMAT exam adaptive?

Yes. GMAC delivers the exam with adaptive question delivery, and its practice exams are adaptive too. GMAC does not publish the adaptive method, the difficulty of each question or the number of unscored trial questions. Do not build your plan on guesses about the algorithm.

GMAT 2027 Sectional Time Limit

The GMAT exam pattern 2027 gives each section a fixed limit of 45 minutes. There is no time limit per question. You split the 45 minutes across the questions yourself.

The table shows the average time per question in the GMAT exam pattern. This is our arithmetic, not a GMAC figure.

SectionTimeAverage per question
Quantitative Reasoning45 minAbout 2 min 9 s
Verbal Reasoning45 minAbout 1 min 57 s
Data Insights45 minAbout 2 min 15 s

The appointment is longer than the 2 h 15 min in the GMAT exam pattern. A test centre visit takes about 2.5 hours with check-in. You must finish within three and a half hours of your appointment start time. Online delivery adds one routine. You show the proctor the front and back of your physical whiteboard, blank, at three points. These are before you start, before the break and before the end.

Can I choose the order of sections in the GMAT exam?

Yes. The GMAT exam pattern lets you answer the three sections in any order. Our suggestion is to start with the section that you find hardest, if your focus drops late in the test.

When can I take the break in the GMAT exam?

The GMAT exam pattern allows a single optional 10-minute break, after the first section or after the second section. If you take it after section 1, you lose the break after section 2. If you skip the break screen, the next section starts automatically in 60 seconds. If you return late, the extra time is deducted from your next section.

How much time do I get per question in the GMAT exam?

You get about two minutes on average, but GMAC sets no time per question. GMAC says taking longer on one question does not lower your score. GMAC publishes no negative marking, but it penalises a section you do not finish. Spend your time so that you reach the last question in every section. Use Review & Edit only if you are ahead of time.

GMAT 2027 Marking Scheme: How GMAT Scoring Works

The GMAT exam marking scheme is not a list of marks. GMAC publishes no marks per question and no negative marking. The score comes from your answers and the difficulty of the questions you meet. This marking scheme is part of the GMAT exam pattern and works the same way for all three sections.

How many marks is each question in the GMAT exam?

None. GMAC gives no marks per question. Three things set your section score. The first is the difficulty of questions you answer correctly. The second is the difficulty of those you answer wrongly. The third is the number you leave unanswered. GMAC does not publish a marking scheme table that converts correct answers to a score.

Does the GMAT exam have negative marking?

GMAC publishes no negative marking. GMAC gives no per-question marks, so a wrong answer is not minus one mark. The GMAT exam marking scheme works on question difficulty instead. The penalty that GMAC does state is for an unfinished section. Your score is reduced in line with the number of questions you leave unanswered.

GMAC also lists five myths about the GMAT exam pattern. It calls all five false.

  • Taking longer on a question lowers your score.
  • Getting question 1 or 2 wrong makes the rest of the section worse.
  • Changing a correct answer to a wrong one in Review & Edit counts extra against you.
  • Leaving a question blank is better than guessing when time runs out.
  • Some question types weigh more than others.

You can bookmark questions and use the Question Review & Edit screen at the end of each section. You can edit up to three answers. If time has run out, you skip the review screen. Read the marking scheme as a difficulty-based system, not a points system.

GMAT Marking Scheme: Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is a perfect 805 possible in the GMAT exam?

Yes, 805 is the top total. It sits at the 100th percentile. After a perfect score, GMAC makes you wait five years before you test again.

2. How accurate is a GMAT score?

A total score can move by about 30 to 40 points. GMAC gives the standard error as about 30 to 40 points for the total. For each section it is about 3 points. Schools know this, so one test day is not the whole story.

3. Can I see my score at the end of the GMAT exam?

Yes, the unofficial score. It shows on screen right after the exam. You cannot save, screenshot or print it. The Official Score Report follows later. See the GMAT 2027 results page.

GMAT 2027 Section-Wise Syllabus and Important Topics

GMAC publishes a content list for each section of the GMAT exam, not a unit-wise syllabus. The list below is the official one. It works as the syllabus for the GMAT exam pattern.

SectionOfficial content list
Quantitative ReasoningArithmetic and elementary algebra, in Problem Solving questions
Verbal ReasoningReading Comprehension skills and Critical Reasoning question types
Data InsightsData Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, Two-Part Analysis

Reading Comprehension tests main idea, supporting idea, inference, application, logical structure and style. Critical Reasoning covers strengthen, weaken, flaw, support and plan evaluation questions. GMAC names no most-important topics, and the three sections count equally in the total. The full topic view is on the GMAT 2027 syllabus page.

GMAT Exam Pattern Changes Over the Years

The GMAT exam pattern changed in a big way when the GMAT Focus Edition launched in November 2023. The 10th Edition was retired at the end of January 2024. Since then, GMAC has made no change to the section structure that we could find.

  1. Nov 2023

    GMAT Focus Edition launched

Three sections: Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights. Score scale 205-805.

  2. 1 Feb 2024

    10th Edition replaced

GMAC retired the 200-800 test. Old scores stay valid for five years from the test date.

  3. Jun 2025

Aadhaar no longer accepted as ID

A passport is the only ID for Indian test takers, at test centres and online.

  4. 12 Aug 2026

    Exam policies re-issued

GMAC updated its policies and procedures. They apply to appointments on or after this date.

Is the GMAT exam pattern different from the old GMAT?

Yes. The current GMAT exam pattern has three sections, and Data Insights replaced Integrated Reasoning. It has no essay section. The total marks scale is 205-805, not 200-800. GMAC also lists the choice of section order, Question Review & Edit and the Superscore among the changes. Do not use study material written for the 10th Edition without checking it.

Is there a change in the GMAT exam pattern for 2027?

No change to the GMAT exam pattern 2027 has been announced as of 20 Oct 2026. GMAC says fees, rules and terms are subject to change. Check the exam structure page before you book your appointment.

GMAT 2027 Exam Pattern: 10th Edition vs Current Exam

The GMAT exam pattern of today, the GMAT Focus Edition, is not the same test as the 10th Edition. The scores do not match by number. GMAC publishes concordance tables that match scores by percentile. The latest ones were published in August 2026.

10th Edition scoreCurrent scorePercentile (approx.)
800805100
75071598.6
73068595.1
72066591.2
70064585.6
650605 to 61569 to 75
600555 to 56547 to 50
550515 to 52532 to 34

Is a 700 on the old GMAT equal to 700 on the current exam?

No. A 700 on the 10th Edition matches about 645 on the current exam, at about the 86th percentile. GMAC says comparing total scores directly is not appropriate. Compare percentiles instead. Some schools still quote class medians on the old scale, so read the edition named in each school's profile. The GMAT colleges 2027 page lists what schools publish.

To practise the current GMAT exam pattern, use GMAC's own practice exams. GMAC says they use the same algorithm, scoring and timing as the real exam. Practice Exams 1 and 2 are free in the Starter Kit. The GMAT 2027 books page lists the paid options in order.
