IIT Delhi charges Rs 1,00,000 in tuition per semester, which is Rs 2,00,000 a year. IIT Delhi awards the MCM Scholarship to about 25% of General/OBC/EWS students of the admitted or sanctioned strength, subject to the applicable family-income criterion.
That is the arithmetic it is built on. Indian Institute of Technology Delhi runs four financial-aid routes for 2026. They are the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, an automatic fee waiver for SC, ST and PwD students, the Institute Free Studentship, and donor-funded awards. It does not depend on a top JEE Advanced rank. Some donor-funded scholarships may use JEE rank as a criterion.
So who gets how much? A General, OBC-NCL or EWS student from a family earning up to Rs 8 lakh a year may qualify, subject to the available MCM allocation and applicable conditions. That is a full tuition waiver plus Rs 4,000 in cash every month. Every SC, ST and PwD student gets the tuition waiver, whatever the family earns. Extra support follows below Rs 8 lakh. Read the IIT Delhi fee structure first, so the figures below sit against what a family would otherwise pay.
Who should read this page closely? Any family earning at or below Rs 8 lakh a year. That one line decides more of the outcome here than the entrance rank does.

IIT Delhi runs four separate schemes, and each one solves a different family's problem. Mixing them up is the commonest mistake a first-time applicant makes.
The Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship is the one most General, OBC-NCL and EWS students actually get. It pays Rs 4,000 a month and waives the full tuition fee on top. It is awarded to about 25% of General/OBC/EWS students of the admitted or sanctioned strength, subject to the income criterion. Family income is, capped at Rs 8 lakh a year.
Now here is the arithmetic, shown in full. Tuition is Rs 1,00,000 a semester, so Rs 2,00,000 across the two semesters of one year. An MCM recipient pays none of that. Add Rs 4,000 in cash every month the scholarship runs. A qualifying family's real first-year benefit runs to more than Rs 2,00,000. That does not trim the published fee. It removes the tuition line completely and pays a monthly allowance besides.
IIT Delhi publishes the stipend as Rs 4,000 per month. It does not state how many months a year it pays. So it gives the monthly figure and stops there.
SC, ST and PwD students sit in a separate, wider scheme. Every SC, ST and PwD student gets a full tuition-fee exemption, whatever the family earns. SC and ST students earning under Rs 8 lakh get more. Free messing, plus Rs 1,000 a month as pocket allowance. Families often read that as one award. It is two benefits stacked on one profile.
The Institute Free Studentship is an overflow route, not a higher-income route. IIT Delhi states one condition for it. If more than 25% of students qualify for the MCM Scholarship, IIT Delhi waives tuition for a further 10%, on the basis of means alone. So it catches students who clear the income test but fall outside the MCM quota. A family earning above the MCM ceiling does not reach it.
IIT Delhi also manages donor-funded scholarships. Criteria vary award by award: family income, branch, gender, a JEE Advanced rank band, or academic performance once enrolled. The Academics Section matches most of them automatically, without a separate student application.
Pays Rs 4,000 a month and waives the full tuition fee, worth Rs 2,00,000 a year to a top-band family, for General, OBC-NCL and EWS students from families earning up to Rs 8 lakh a year. Renewal needs a 6.0 SGPA and CGPA. About 25% of the student body holds it.

Eligibility splits cleanly by scheme. Find the row that matches the student's category first.
Think of the family income certificate the way you think of a ration card. It is the single paper that decides what you pay, and an expired one stops the benefit.
For MCM and Free Messing, students declare parental income on ERP and submit the prescribed income documentation/forms. Donor and external scholarships may have their own application requirements.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Proof of income | You upload a valid family income certificate on the institute ERP portal, and renew it every year |
| 2. Automatic MCM screening | Academics Section checks your uploaded income against the Rs 8 lakh cutoff |
| 3. Category verification | The section confirms SC, ST and PwD status against admission records for the automatic fee waiver |
| 4. Donor scholarship matching | The section matches students who meet a donor award's named criteria and notifies them directly |
| 5. Annual renewal check | The section checks SGPA and CGPA each year against the 6.0 threshold for MCM continuation |

You upload a valid, current income certificate every year for the MCM Scholarship, through the ERP portal. An expired certificate pauses the tuition waiver until you renew it.
SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS or PwD status uses the certificate you already filed at admission. You submit a fresh copy only if the institute asks for a re-verification.
The Academics Section pulls your SGPA and CGPA for the latest completed semester straight from institute records, to check MCM renewal each year. You submit nothing.
You link your own bank account on the ERP portal, and IIT Delhi credits the Rs 4,000 MCM stipend and the SC/ST Rs 1,000 pocket allowance directly into it.
IIT Delhi runs no written test and no interview for any of its scholarships. The Academics Section decides on records the institute already holds. Eligibility does not guarantee every award.
For the MCM, the section checks your uploaded income certificate against the Rs 8 lakh threshold. A student meeting the income and category conditions is considered for MCM within the institute's applicable allocation; award and renewal are subject to the scheme rules. The section repeats the check each year. For SC, ST and PwD students, the category status confirmed at admission triggers the tuition waiver. No further check follows. The same income screening decides the messing and pocket allowance.
Donor-funded scholarships work case by case. The section matches most of them automatically. A few ask the student to apply, when the criteria cannot be read off existing records.
There is one more thing to ask before you count on any of this. Ask the Academics Section which month the first stipend actually reaches the bank account. The fee deadline and the first disbursal do not always fall in the same month.

Answers to what readers ask most often.
General, OBC-NCL and EWS students from families earning up to Rs 8 lakh a year qualify for the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship in 2026. Every SC, ST and PwD student qualifies for a full tuition waiver regardless of income. Data Sources: IIT Delhi Financial Assistance.
The MCM Scholarship pays Rs 4,000 a month and waives the full tuition fee. Tuition is Rs 1,00,000 per semester for a qualifying general-category family, so the waiver is worth Rs 2,00,000 a year. Data Sources: IIT Delhi Financial Assistance; IIT Delhi UG fee circular, AY 2026-27.
IIT Delhi waives tuition for 10% of students on the basis of means alone, and runs the scheme when more than 25% of students qualify for the MCM Scholarship. It is a means-tested overflow route for students who clear the income test but fall outside the MCM quota. A family earning above the MCM ceiling does not qualify through it. Yes, renewal needs a minimum 6.0 SGPA and CGPA every year, so a semester below that puts the scholarship at risk until your average recovers. If a bad semester would be a problem for your family, plan around the full fee, not the scholarship fee. Data Sources: IIT Delhi Financial Assistance.
