IIT Delhi: Admission 2027, Courses, Fees, Cutoff, Placement & Ranking

IIT Delhi's charter names it a training and research institute for science, engineering and technology. Parliament wrote that into law in 1963, under the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act. That Act brought this campus under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961. The 1961 Act originally covered Kharagpur, Bombay, Madras and Kanpur only. That statute is why IIT Delhi sets its own syllabus. It awards its own degrees too, instead of answering to a state university board.
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi holds NIRF 2025 rank 4 Overall and rank 2 in Engineering. The seat is hard to win. The degree is highly regarded once you hold it.

So who should apply, and who should think twice? A rank that reaches Computer Science and Engineering or Electrical Engineering makes the fee worth the extra expense. The placement drive and the research depth support this. Check that branch on the IIT Delhi placement report before you rank it above a stronger branch elsewhere.

What does the IIT Delhi fee buy you? IIT Delhi charges Rs 1,00,000 in tuition per semester. Two semesters make Rs 2,00,000 a year. That rate applies to a general-category family earning above Rs 5 lakh. That is the number to plan around. A four-year B.Tech inside a statutory institute with Institution of Eminence status. Who fits this campus, and who does not? It fits a student who wants research depth and a large alumni base in technology, finance and consulting. It does not fit a student who wants a subject well outside engineering. The grading curve is demanding. The course list still leans technical, even with newer schools in artificial intelligence, design and public policy.

Why does IIT Delhi carry no NAAC grade? NAAC accredits colleges under the UGC Act. IIT Delhi runs under a separate law. That is the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, amended in 1963 to cover this campus. It holds Institution of Eminence status instead. Every IIT works this way, which is why no IIT website shows a NAAC score.

IIT Delhi runs 16 departments and 6 specialised schools, and 14 of those departments run an undergraduate programme. Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Management Studies run none. Most undergraduate routes admit through JEE Advanced. The B.Des is the exception: the Design department admits it through UCEED.

IIT Delhi groups its courses by department, not as one flat catalogue. Compare the department name, not only the branch name. The core B.Tech departments are:

• Applied Mechanics, Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering
• Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering
• Energy Science and Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Textile and Fibre Engineering

A newer B.Tech route runs through the Design department, which also offers a B.Des admitted through UCEED. The Chemistry department runs a four-year B.S. Beyond the undergraduate level, IIT Delhi runs a 2-year M.Sc in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The Department of Management Studies runs an MBA and a PhD. Humanities and Social Sciences runs an M.A. And a PhD. Six schools round out the list: the School of Artificial Intelligence, Kusuma School of Biological Sciences, the Amar Nath and Shashi Khosla School of Information Technology, Bharti School of Telecommunication Technology and Management, School of Public Policy, and School of Interdisciplinary Research. What does each IIT Delhi course cost? Every B.Tech seat sits on one institute fee scale, whatever the branch. General, OBC-NCL and EWS families earning above Rs 5 lakh pay Rs 1,00,000 per semester. That is Rs 2,00,000 a year. Families earning Rs 1-5 lakh pay Rs 33,333 a semester, or Rs 66,666 a year. Tuition falls to zero below Rs 1 lakh, and for every SC, ST and PwD student.

Does IIT Delhi charge the fee every year? Yes, and twice inside each year. Tuition and the other-charges line repeat every semester. The one-time payment and the refundable deposit come only in the first semester. Which course costs least? None, by branch. IIT Delhi admits B.Tech students through JoSAA, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority, once you clear JEE Advanced. You fill no separate IIT Delhi application form for the undergraduate seat.

What is the IIT Delhi eligibility rule? You need a qualifying JEE Advanced rank in your category. You also need the exam's Class 12 marks criterion. It sets a minimum aggregate, relaxed for SC, ST and PwD candidates. The IIT Delhi cutoff for your category then decides whether that rank clears the bar. JoSAA did 5 rounds of counselling in 2026. You rank your institute-branch choices before seat-allocation rounds begin.

How does IIT Delhi select students? Your rank decides, not an interview. Your JEE Advanced rank, inside your category and quota, fixes which branch you can reach here. Each round narrows the field, because higher-rank candidates lock their seats first. After an allotment you pick one of three moves. Freeze it, Float for a better branch, or Slide to a different branch on the same campus.

You then upload the required documents on the JoSAA portal, and pay the Seat Acceptance Fee. JoSAA's 2026 Business Rules set it at Rs 30,000 for General, OBC-NCL and EWS candidates. SC, ST and PwD candidates pay Rs 15,000. Rs 5,000 of either amount is JoSAA's own processing charge. IIT Delhi runs no campus interview for the B.Tech. IIT Delhi does not disclose high-value salary figures in its own placement press releases. That is a stated policy. So the crore-plus numbers that circulate every placement season carry no confirmation from the institute.

IIT Delhi does confirm volume. Its December 2025 update reports 1,275 offers, with more than 1,140 students placed. More than 300 of those were pre-placement offers, up 33% on the 2024-25 season. More than 35 offers came from international recruiters in Japan, the Netherlands, Singapore, the UAE and the UK. Recruiters posting double-digit offers included Amazon, Google, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo.

JoSAA publishes the IIT Delhi cutoff, and the 2026 cycle is now closed and final. Look up your exact category, round and branch. A General CSE rank and an OBC-NCL Mechanical rank are different numbers entirely.

In JoSAA Round 5 of 2026, Computer Science and Engineering closed at rank 128 for OPEN Gender-Neutral candidates. Textile Technology closed at 6,580 in the same pool. About 25% of IIT Delhi students hold the Merit-cum-Means Scholarship. It pays Rs 4,000 a month and waives the full tuition fee. That waiver is worth Rs 2,00,000 a year to a top-band family. The family must earn up to Rs 8 lakh a year. The student must keep a CGPA of at least 6.0.

Every SC, ST and PwD student gets a full tuition exemption regardless of income. SC and ST students under Rs 8 lakh also get free mess and Rs 1,000 a month. The Institute Free Studentship waives tuition for a further 10% of students, on means alone. IIT Delhi runs it whenever more than 25% qualify for the MCM. Donor-funded scholarships add another layer. IIT Delhi holds NIRF 2025 rank 4 Overall. It also holds rank 2 in Engineering, rank 3 in Research and rank 4 in Management. In the QS World University Rankings 2027, released in June 2026, it reached global rank 118. The 2026 edition had placed it at 123. It stayed India's No. 1-ranked institute.

For the B.Tech, the B.S. In Chemistry and the B.Tech in Design, you sit JEE Advanced. Only candidates who first clear JEE Main, and rank inside the eligible bracket, may sit it. For M.Tech and most postgraduate engineering seats, you sit GATE instead. For the B.Des, you sit UCEED.

JEE Advanced tests Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics well past the school syllabus. It is required for every IIT B.Tech, not only this one. GATE works differently. It is subject-specific, so a Computer Science GATE score will not reach a Mechanical Engineering seat. A qualifying GATE score also opens a Ministry of Education stipend during the M.Tech. The Department of Management Studies admits its MBA on a CAT score plus an interview.

IIT Delhi runs three campuses. The main campus sits in Hauz Khas, South Delhi. A second campus runs at Rajiv Gandhi Education City in Kundli, Sonipat, Haryana. IIT Delhi started its first academic programme there in September 2026. A third campus, IIT Delhi-Abu Dhabi in the UAE, has admitted undergraduate students since 2024.

On the Hauz Khas campus, undergraduate hostel rooms run non-air-conditioned, with air-conditioned common areas. Students run the hostels themselves under the Board of Hostel Management, with faculty acting as mentors rather than administrators.

Students describe IIT Delhi as a demanding place with a strong peer group and a close hostel culture. Their complaints are mostly about workload and basic living conditions. Google rates the campus 4.7 from about 5,100 reviews, though many of these come from visitors, not students.

• Hostel life: Many students advise newcomers to live in the hostel instead of commuting. They say most club work, fests and placement preparation happen late in the evening.
