IIM Shillong - Indian Institute of Management Shillong

IIM Shillong is the only IIM in North East India. It is an Institute of National Importance under the IIM Act 2017. The IIM Shillong Board of Governors first met on 7 November 2007, and the institute treats that day as its Foundation Day. The first PGP batch began in 2008 with 64 students at the Mayurbhanj Complex in Shillong. The Indian Institute of Management Shillong, or IIM Shillong, moved to its 120-acre campus at Umsawli in 2021.

Courses in IIM Shillong include a two-year PGP, a one-year PGPEx, a two-year PGPWE for working executives and a five-year IPM. IIM Shillong also runs two doctoral programmes. IIM Shillong runs its own admission process, so your shortlist here can differ from the one at any other IIM.

Does IIM Shillong Have a Student Exchange Programme?

Yes. IIM Shillong runs a Student Exchange Programme, and PGP students can spend one term at a partner business school abroad. The institute lists 30 partner institutions, and 11 second-year PGP students went abroad for three months in 2024. Students are chosen on CGPA rank and the seats at the host school. IIM Shillong admission to the PGP runs on CAT, a profile-based shortlist and a personal interview. CAT 2026 is on Sunday 29 November 2026, and registration has closed. IIM Shillong admission 2027 follows the PGP 2026-28 rules for now, because the 2027-29 policy is not out. The IIM Shillong admission process has three steps.

1. You clear the CAT percentile bar in each of the three sections.
2. IIM Shillong shortlists you for the interview on a composite of your CAT percentile and your profile.
3. You attend the personal interview, and offers follow the final merit list.

How Does IIM Shillong Shortlist Candidates for the Interview?

The IIM Shillong shortlist score gives 65% to your total CAT percentile and 35% to a Normalised Application Rating Score. The rating score uses your Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks and your months of work experience. IIM Shillong then shortlists within each graduation discipline and social category. The final merit list gives 40% to CAT and 40% to the interview. It gives 10% to the rating score and 10% to a gender score. Who Gets an IIM Shillong Scholarship?

The NBFA goes to economically weak PGP students, chosen on family income, liquidity and need. IIM Shillong decides the number of awardees and the amount each year. NIRF data for 2024-25 shows 19 students received full tuition reimbursement from state or central government funds. It shows none from the institute.

IIM Shillong ranks 38th in the NIRF 2025 Management category, with a score of 57.70. That makes it 19th among the 21 IIMs in the list. The NIRF Management list for 2026 is not yet published. IIM Shillong was 24th in NIRF 2024 and 38th in NIRF 2025, a fall of 14 places. The biggest drop was in Outreach and Inclusivity, from 74.09 to 61.49.
