The BA (Hons) British Sign Language & Deaf Studies (Foundation Entry) program at University of Central Lancashire is a unique program that provides in-depth knowledge about the Deaf community and Deaf culture. The program starts with a foundation year to introduce students to key concepts and skills, followed by three years of detailed study. Students will learn British Sign Language (BSL) and are taught by both Deaf and hearing tutors, ensuring a fully immersive experience. The course also introduces students to Deaf History and the development of BSL, as well as the many different aspects of Deaf culture. The program provides a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Students will have the opportunity to put theory into practice during a placement year in a Deaf-related field. This placement provides valuable insight into the when, how, and where to use sign language appropriately. Moreover, this course allows students to explore issues affecting the Deaf community such as social inclusion, human rights, and educational provision. Challenges faced by Deaf people within the justice system as well as BSL linguistics are also key components of the curriculum. This program prepares students for a wide range of careers working with the Deaf community, including education, social work, and community development. Graduates may also be able to progress onto postgraduate study or advanced level interpreting and translation programs.
