Automation engineering involves the design, development and implementation of sensor and robotic systems. At its core is the combination of mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering with computer technology, namely, mechatronics.

This multi-disciplinary programme will equip you for a diverse range of modern technological roles. You’ll develop a range of skills in the design and implementation of automation solutions; from 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD, Solid-Modelling), sensor and instrumentation selection, and programming of robotics to the management of the resulting systems.

The programme combines academic classwork and hands-on work in our labs and workshops. It covers the integration of mechanical, manufacturing, electrical and electronics systems with software engineering and computer technology; design and construction of electromechanical systems operating under programmed control; the functionality, operation and integration of a variety of electro-mechanical hybrid devices, equipment and systems; safe use of tools, machines and materials, and software based engineering tools and applications.

You will benefit from work placement in Semester 2 of Year 2.

On graduation, you’ll qualify for associateship membership (AMIEI) of Engineers Ireland.

Further Study

If you reach the appropriate level in final examinations and meet certain subject prerequisites, you may progress to a Level 8 honours degree. You’ll typically enter at Year 3 of the four-year programme.

Bolton Street campus has been a centre for technological education for over 100 years. This three storey neo-classical building was designed by CJ McCarthy and was built in 1908. It has since been extend in 1961 and again in 1987. Plaster representations of artisan figures decorate the hallway and corridors of this ornate building. The figures are casts from John Henry Foley's models for figures at the base of the Albert Memorial on Leinster Lawn. Despite substantial extensions, the essential historic character of the building has been maintained and the building forms an important part of the surrounding streetscape. The campus is fully equipped with computer and electronic labs, lecture theatres with the latest audio- visual equipment and learning aids, fully equipped workshops, library, restaurants, students’ union area, and student recreation area.
