Ways To Study Abroad Inexpensively or for Free

Fortunately, there are some ways for you to cut costs and study overseas inexpensively or even for free.

Enroll directly in a foreign university or language school

Many countries offer affordable education but have an expensive living cost, while other countries have it the other way around.

For example, La Sorbonne in Paris has no tuition fee, only a registration fee of about $200. The only disadvantage is its prerequisite language as the University teaches in French.

Craft a list of five countries you would like to study. Then, look for the websites of its public universities to see if their tuition is feasible for you. It is also important to consider these countries’ cost of living.

Public universities in Norway are free of charge for all students, but their high cost of living makes it a less attractive option for others. Germany also provides tuition-free education. Its living costs are much cheaper than in the US.

Volunteer abroad

If you want to learn abroad, why not consider volunteering instead? After all, studying does not end in universities. So, apply for immersive volunteer work abroad to gain foreign language and cultural knowledge without breaking the bank.

Make sure to find a program that is free or affordable. One good example is the worldwide organic farming network (WWOOF) which aims to pair volunteers with farmers who need extra hands to help. As an exchange, you will receive free food and housing. Make the most out of your stay and learn the country’s local culture and language.

Complete a work-study

Balancing your study while working overseas can be a little complicated especially for international students when it comes to requisite visas and such. Luckily, some programs bypass this situation for you to offset your study expenses by earning a salary. Pick a study destination like Australia or New Zealand that permits international students to work while studying.

Many countries in the EU will allow you to have a part-time job, but this depends on the duration of your stay. Check your chosen country about its labor laws and working visa policies.

Apply for scholarships and grants

Being awarded a scholarship or grant is the easiest way to remove the burden of study costs. You can receive a merit-based scholarship that is based on one’s intellectual capacity and not financial capability.

Look for such financial aids on the internet. Make sure that this scholarship matches your program, subject, and country of study.

Choose an affordable study program

If you can’t find a free option or you don’t want to hassle yourself with all the study abroad matters, you can simply choose to go for the less expensive side. Search universities that offer a much affordable study program than the others.
