Many international students choose Ireland as their host country for studying abroad due to various reasons. For one, Ireland is known for having one of the best education systems worldwide.
In fact, many Irish universities consistently rank in various global university rankings. Ireland is also known for its picturesque surroundings, rich culture, high quality of life, and its people for their hospitality and fun nature. So the cost of living understandably is high.Â
However, it does not mean that education is not accessible to international students worldwide. In fact, there are hundreds of scholarships and financial aid that Ireland offers for international students. These scholarships may come from the government, international and local Irish organizations, and higher education institutions (HEIs).Â
Read on to find out the scholarships to study in Ireland that are available for international students.Â

Government of Ireland – International Education Scholarships
The Government of Ireland – International Education Scholarships (GOI-IES) is a financial aid program for non-EU/EEA students. It was established under the provision of Ireland’s Government’s International Education Strategy. This program provides 60 scholarships for a one-year study in various higher education levels (bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D.) in all fields of study from eligible HEIs.Â
Those eligible for the GOI-IES are international students not belonging to EU and EEA countries.Â
International students will get funding for their student fees and living expenses including a stipend of €10,000 for a year’s study, and a full waiver of all tuition and registration costs.Â
Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship ProgrammeÂ
This scholarship is focused on postgraduate studies in research across all disciplines and is one of the most prestigious awards for excellent research.Â
Those eligible for this scholarship will get a €16,000 per year stipend, fee contribution up to €5,750 per year, and direct research expenses of €2,250 per year.Â
The criteria for this scholarship’s eligibility are the following:Â
- Have a master’s degreeÂ
- Have a first-class or upper second-class honors bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
- Is or was not a holder of any other Council postgraduate scholarshipÂ
- Is a new applicant for a degree which they are applying for
Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is a scholarship program under the EU and supports higher education in Europe.Â
This is eligible to EU and EEA member citizens, and partner countries of the EU participating in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.Â
Those eligible for an Erasmus+ assistance are exempted from paying tuition fees at their host institutions and will receive regular financial support from the European Commission for a maximum of 12 months.Â
Institution-Based Scholarships
Many HEIs, including top universities in Ireland, also offer various scholarships to international students both for EU and non-EU citizens. Although most of them are merit-based, there are also scholarships being offered for specific programs, specific to partner countries, specific criteria (such as gender or economic status), and specific to those excelling in sports.Â
Other Scholarships
There are other scholarships offered by various local and international organizations in Ireland for more specific programs or nationalities. For example, the Walsh Scholarship focuses on the application of knowledge for the sustainable development of agriculture and food processing. The Claddagh Scholarship Programme, on the other hand, is only offered for Chinese nationals.
