How to Find an Apartment in the US

Renting an apartment is an excellent accommodation choice. In the United States, apartments vary in size, cost, and utilities.

International students in the US need an apartment that suits their lifestyle. The right apartment must also provide comfort and security.

If you’re unsure how to pick the right apartment, we’ve got you covered. Here are some things that will help you find an apartment in the US:

Know Your Budget

Your budget will dictate the type of apartment you can get and where. It will also influence other associated costs such as bills and extra utilities.

Before looking for an apartment, set an amount that you’re willing to spend. Will you be comfortable inside a cheap yet small flat? Or will a spacious, expensive place be better?

Other US apartments offer great deals to students. You may find a semi-furnished apartment that already comes with free Wi-Fi and cable.

An apartment must be within your set budget. But, you can also create an allowance to adjust your budget to the apartment you want.

Determining the Right Type of Apartment

Some apartments come furnished with certain items such as bed frames and a kitchen stove. Others come with separate bedrooms and communal areas for dining and entertainment.

If you’re alone, narrow down your options to one-bedroom apartments. You can also opt for smaller spaces since they cost less.

If you have roommates, find an apartment that offers many rooms. These cost more but at least you’ll share the monthly rent with others.

You must also know which appliances come free of charge. This will help you determine if there are still items that you need to buy.

Find a Location

The apartment’s proximity to the campus is vital. If you’re much closer, you can save on transportation by walking to school. You can also choose an apartment that is close enough to transport stations to save time on commuting.

The location also defines the cost of the apartment. Flats in urban areas are naturally the more expensive options than ones in rural locations. But the former often have better access to important establishments such as clinics than the latter.

Apartments outside the city cost less. While there is more privacy, you may compromise on certain services. This includes Wi-Fi coverage and places such as supermarkets and shopping centers.

Your lifestyle will help you determine which location is best for you. Don’t forget to consider your long-term and short-term needs when choosing a location.

Assess the Leasing Contract

Most landlords assess the credit history of a potential student. But since you’re a foreign student, you may not have a credit history yet.

Remember to disclose your status to the landlord. Be honest about not having a credit history. Otherwise, you may find yourself in big trouble.

Instead of your credit history, you can have a friend or relative to vouch for your financial ability. Alternatively, you can offer to deposit a large amount so that the landlord knows you’re able to pay your rent.
