Hold on, you can be wrong. Trusting people easily can be dangerous for you even when you are in college. While the threat of danger is always present, it is important for you to be prepared when such situations come.
Of course, we certainly hope that these won’t arise but it is best to get you prepared for any given situation. Here are ways to keep yourself safe:
1. Always be aware of your surroundings
We understand that listening to your favorite music with headphones is a thing that you like to do. But this, which zones you out of the surroundings, should be avoided.
When you become unaware of what is going on around you, you need to silent your music down and put your phone away to be aware of what’s happening in front of you. By doing so, you also avoid your phone being snatched or yourself being hit by something.
2. Do not walk alone at night
Basically, walking alone, especially in the dark, is asking for trouble. It is advised to never walk solo and practice the buddy system so when something happens, you are not alone.
3. Carry emergency cash
Having cash with you at all times may be best when the need arises. You don’t want to be stuck in a grocery cashier just because your budget fell short or your credit card won’t work.
4. Save emergency contacts on your phone
You need to save all emergency contacts from the local police, hospital, fire station, family, to the relative closest to your location. Also, list them down in your planner if you have one.
5. Know your way around campus
Paying attention to your surroundings is a thing, but knowing your surroundings is another thing. Be familiarized with campus buildings, landmarks, and facilities, so that you will find it easy to locate where your next classes are.
6. Locate the emergency system areas
There are a lot of emergency buttons or phones placed in different parts of campus to be used for emergencies. Learn about your campus emergency system and locate where these are placed. With this, security inside the campus is much ensured.
7. Bring a pepper spray or a whistle
We certainly hope that these self-defense mechanisms won’t be used in your stay in college but having one is reasonable. It can be a lifesaver in harmful situations that are not easy to get out of.
8. Do not be inebriated
Social life on campus is fun but your safety must come first. There can be a lot of alcohol at parties and be sure to drink moderately. Surely, you do not want to lose control of yourself. Some friends, even if you trust them, could take advantage of you if you can’t act rationally.
To avoid such cases, stay at a party with a friend that you can absolutely trust. Staying at a party solo is not a smart and unsafe thing to do. No matter how nice everyone seems, it is not worth the risk to stay.
Whatever college you’re going to, whether you’re a new or returning student, it is a must that you take note of how to take the right precautions if something happens.
