How Many IIMs Are There in India?

There are 22 IIMs in India in 2026. The count moved twice in three years. If an older blog says 20 or 21, here is why the number changed:

Every IIM is an autonomous Institute of National Importance under the IIM Act, 2017. Each one can set its own fees, admission criteria, selection weightage and cutoffs. So there is no single "IIM cutoff" for all 22 colleges.

Which Is the 21st IIM in India?

IIM Mumbai is the 21st IIM in India. It was NITIE Mumbai until Parliament converted it into an IIM in 2023. Before that, India had 20 IIMs.

What Are the 22 IIMs in India?

Old IIM List (1961–1996): The BLACKI IIMs and IIM Mumbai

The old IIMs include the six BLACKI institutes: Bangalore, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Kozhikode and Indore. IIM Mumbai is listed here too, because NITIE dates back to 1963.

New IIM List (2007–2011)

Baby IIM List (2015–2025)

Older IIMs usually have stronger alumni networks and bigger batches. Newer and baby IIMs usually have smaller batches and lower fees.

21 IIM List: The List Before IIM Guwahati

Many pages still search for the "21 IIM list". It is the same list as above without IIM Guwahati: the 7 old IIMs, 7 new IIMs and 7 baby IIMs (Nagpur to Jammu). That was the full list from 2023 until Guwahati was added in 2025.

The next IIMs in the NIRF 2025 top 25 are Rohtak (19), Udaipur (21), Kashipur (23) and Nagpur (25).

Three points stand out in this top IIM list:

• IIM Ahmedabad is No. 1 for the sixth year in a row.
• IIM Calcutta fell from 5th in 2024 to 7th in 2025. It held 3rd place until 2022, and IIM Kozhikode replaced it in 2023. Do not assume the old order still holds.
• IIM Mumbai holds the 6th rank for the second year in a row, only two years after it became an IIM.

IIM Ahmedabad World Ranking

Global MBA rankings measure the flagship MBA only, so they differ from NIRF. In the QS Global MBA Rankings 2026, IIM Bangalore is 52nd, IIM Ahmedabad 58th and IIM Calcutta 64th in the world. In the Financial Times Global MBA Rankings 2026, IIM Ahmedabad is 27th, IIM Bangalore 34th and IIM Calcutta 53rd. IIM Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode also appear in the FT top 100.

IIM Fees 2026: Fee List of All 22 IIMs

IIM fees for the two-year IIM MBA (PGP) range from about ₹17.90 lakh to ₹27.50 lakh. The figures below are headline totals. Actual cost is higher once you add mess charges, deposits and other fees. Batches differ by row, so always check the latest fee on the IIM's own admissions page.

Which IIM Has Low Fees?

IIM Rohtak has the lowest headline fee at about ₹17.90 lakh for 2026-28. IIM Bodh Gaya (₹17.96 lakh) and IIM Guwahati (₹18 lakh) are next. IIM Lucknow is the cheapest of the old IIMs at about ₹20.75 lakh. IIM Ahmedabad charges the most at ₹27.50 lakh for PGP 2025-27, of which ₹20.10 lakh is tuition. IIM Bangalore MBA Fees and IIM Shillong Fees

IIM Bangalore's PGP fee is about ₹26 lakh for 2026-28. IIM Shillong's PGP fee is about ₹26.2 lakh, which makes it one of the costliest among the newer IIMs. Its tuition is ₹20.5 lakh, and hostel and mess add about ₹5.7 lakh.

IIM Placements: Average Package of Old, New and Baby IIMs

The IIM average package at old IIMs runs from about ₹28 lakh to ₹36 lakh. Baby IIMs report much lower averages, so the IIM average package depends heavily on which IIM you pick. Do not compare rows blindly. IIMs report pay in different ways and for different batches, and some quote Maximum Earning Potential (MEP), which is higher than a plain CTC.

IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Udaipur Average Package

IIM Bodh Gaya reported an average of about ₹14.8 lakh and IIM Udaipur about ₹17.6 lakh. Both figures are on the MEP basis, so the plain CTC would be lower. Compare them with their fees of about ₹18 lakh and ₹21.5 lakh. That ratio matters more than the headline number when you plan a loan.

IIM Ahmedabad Careers: Class of 2026

IIM Ahmedabad placed all 392 students who sought placement in the Class of 2026. The average guaranteed cash component was ₹31.84 lakh and the median was ₹32.50 lakh. IIM graduates mostly join consulting, finance, technology, marketing, general management and operations roles. The mix differs by campus. Older IIMs send more graduates into consulting and finance. An IIM alumni network helps with referrals, mentoring and mid-career moves. Old IIMs have the biggest networks because they have run for decades. Baby IIMs are still building theirs. If you plan a long career in one city or sector, ask which IIM has strong alumni there.

IIM Recruitment: Campus Hiring and Jobs at IIMs

"IIM recruitment" means two different things. For students, it is campus recruitment, the final placement process that runs in the second year. For job seekers, it is hiring of faculty and staff, and each IIM posts those openings on its own website. There is no single common portal.

IIM CAT Cutoff 2026: What Percentile Do You Need?

The IIM CAT cutoff differs for every IIM. For General category candidates, IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta usually call at 99+ percentile. Other old IIMs call at about 97–99. New and baby IIMs call at about 90–97. These are indicative ranges, not official cutoffs.

Two numbers matter for every IIM. The qualifying cutoff is the minimum percentile to be considered. The calling cutoff is the percentile that actually gets an interview call. It is usually much higher. The final shortlist also depends on sectional scores, academics, work experience and diversity.

Two published qualifying cutoffs show how much they differ. Under CAP 2026, IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur set a 90 overall percentile for General category, with sectional cutoffs. IIM Guwahati set 85 overall and 75 in each section for its first batch. IIM Ahmedabad raised its qualifying cutoff for PGP 2026-28 to 95 overall and 85 in each section for General and EWS candidates. It was 80 overall for PGP 2025-27.

CAT Syllabus for IIM Admission

CAT has three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR), and Quantitative Ability (QA). The paper has 68 questions to be solved in 120 minutes, with 40 minutes per section. Recent cycles gave +3 for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong MCQ. TITA questions have no negative marking.

IIM Seat Intake: How Many Seats Does Each IIM Have?

Seat intake in the flagship MBA ranges from about 400 at IIM Ahmedabad to about 570 at IIM Lucknow, and it changes every year. Newer IIMs usually run smaller batches. IIM Guwahati's first batch has 70 seats.

An IIM can also have separate seats for specialised programmes, the five-year integrated programme and executive courses. Planned intake can differ from the number finally admitted. Use the IIM's own seat matrix for the current year.

The remaining seats go to the Open/General category. A bigger batch does not mean easier admission. Large IIMs also receive far more applications.

IIM Admission Process: There Is No Single Common Form

The IIM admission process is not the same for every IIM. Some IIMs shortlist through their CAT application. Others ask for a separate application after CAT results. If you miss a separate form, that IIM may not consider you at all.

IIM UG Entrance Exam: IIM Bangalore and Other Undergraduate Programmes

You can enter an IIM after Class 12 without CAT. The entrance exam depends on the IIM. Dates below are from the 2026 cycle. Check the 2027 notification before you plan.

IIM Bangalore's UG programme needs Class 10 with Mathematics and 60% in Class 12 (55% for SC, ST and PwD). It has multiple exit options and runs online.

Build three target groups: dream IIMs, realistic IIMs and safe IIMs. This gives you options instead of depending on one college or one percentile.

Is IIM Tougher Than CA?

Neither is tougher in every way. They test different things. CAT is a one-day competitive test, and you succeed by beating other candidates on percentile. CA is a multi-stage professional qualification, and you succeed by clearing fixed pass marks at each level.

Look at the numbers. About 2.95 lakh candidates registered for CAT 2025, and about 2.58 lakh appeared. CAT has no pass percentage, because IIMs use percentiles. For CA Final in May 2026, only 14.07% of candidates cleared both groups. Foundation and Intermediate pass rates were 20.09% and 8.47%. CAT is hard because of competition and time pressure. CA is hard because of the number of stages and the syllabus load.
