MQA Revokes Courses at LimKokWing University May Result in Unrecognized Degrees

In Malaysia, international students from LimKokWing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) speak up after the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) revoked the accreditation of some courses. More than 800 international students are affected with the pressing concern on top of their delayed visa renewal process.

“We, the students, are about to embark on our professional careers with great uncertainty and fear. Numerous Bachelors, MBA (Masters of Business Administration degree), and PhD courses have had their accreditation revoked by the MQA — this is because of LimKokWing’s inability to maintain certain requirements and standards set by the relevant authorities,” a concerned foreign student in the university voiced out during the press conference.

Students are worried for their future as they may finish their courses, but such degrees will not be recognized. The MQA revokes accreditation when institutions do not follow the academic syllabus properly or the teaching staff is unqualified. According to the MQA, “the higher education provider shall surrender the certificate of provisional accreditation to the Agency within thirty days from— (a) the date of revocation of the certificate under section 42; or (b) the date of cessation of the programme.”

Teo Ni Cheng, former deputy education minister shared that while the courses were initially accredited but were revoked when they did not meet the quality standards.

However, LimKokWing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) responded that they have no problems with the accreditation. The institution has already resubmitted eight programmes for review and will be put back on track after the 30-day accreditation period.

“We wish to reassure our students that there is no issue with the accreditation of the 8 programmes which we are confident will be put back on track,” a statement from LimKokWing University of Creative Technology.
