How to Get Into IIM

For a graduate seeking the flagship two-year MBA or PGP, how to get into IIM initially comes down to CAT 2026. After that, the process becomes institute-specific. An IIM may look at CAT performance, previous academics, interviews, written assessments, work experience, and diversity factors before arriving at its final admission decision.

From IIM eligibility and CAT 2026, to cutoffs, interviews, fees, documents, and the final offer, this detailed guide walks through every major stage of IIM admission 2027. It also covers routes available after Class 12 and IIM programs that do not use CAT. Where 2027–29 policies are not yet published, the guide uses only the latest officially available criteria and labels the applicable admission cycle as each IIM releases it.

CAT 2026 and IIM Admission 2027: What Is Happening Now?

For IIM admission 2027, the first live deadline is already approaching. CAT 2026 registration is open and will close on September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM. The exam will be held on November 29, 2026. Results are tentatively expected in the first week of January 2027.

The CAT registration 2026 fee is ₹1,350 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates and ₹2,700 for all other candidates. Candidates targeting the 2027 intake should complete registration before the deadline and prepare for the CAT 2026 exam date. After CAT results, admission moves to institute-specific shortlisting and selection. The exact 2027–29 criteria should be checked as individual IIMs publish their official admission policies.

How Can You Get Into IIM? Know Which Admission Route Applies to You

Before answering how can I get into IIM, you need to place yourself in the right applicant category. Graduates usually enter the flagship MBA or PGP through CAT. Class 12 students can target selected undergraduate and integrated programs. Working professionals may follow separate admission processes depending on the IIM course.

Applicant StagePossible IIM RouteEntrance RouteCovered Later
After Class 12Integrated or undergraduate programmeIPMAT, JIPMAT or institute-specific routeYes

For MBA After Graduation

If you are researching how to get into IIM for MBA, CAT is the foremost way for domestic applicants to flagship two-year programs. IIMs then apply their own eligibility, shortlisting, and final-selection criteria. Current official policies also allow eligible final-year students to participate in the admission process, subject to the required documentation and degree-completion conditions.

After Class 12

An IIM route is also possible before graduation, but it is not the standard postgraduate MBA path. For example, IIM Indore currently admits students to its Integrated Program in Management through IPM AT, while IIM Jammu uses JIPMAT for its IPM admission process.

For Working Professionals

Experienced candidates can consider programs designed around professional experience. The entrance route varies by IIM and program. IIM Bangalore’s PGPEM 2027–29, for example, accepts valid CAT, GMAT, GRE or IIMB Test scores, whereas IIM Ahmedabad’s MBA-PGPX 2027–28 requires a valid GMAT or GRE score.

How to Get Admission in IIM for MBA in 2027: Step-by-Step Process

If you are working out how to get admission in IIM, you must first know about CAT eligibility and then move to institute-specific admission policies. An applicant may meet the general requirement but still face additional shortlist conditions at a particular IIM.

1. Confirm Your Eligibility

Before applying, check both CAT requirements and the admission rules of your target IIMs. Basic eligibility gets you into the process, but individual institutes can apply further conditions when preparing their shortlist.

2. Register for CAT 2026

Complete the CAT 2026 application during the official registration window. Enter academic, category, and other requested information exactly as it appears in the records you may later submit.

3. Choose IIM Programs in the CAT Application

Your CAT application also records program preferences. Check the IIM programs available through the form and choose those for which you want your application considered.

4. Appear for CAT 2026

Take CAT 2026 once the application stage is complete. Overall and sectional performance can both enter institute-level shortlisting decisions.

5. Meet IIM-Specific Shortlisting Criteria

There isn't a universal shortlist criterion that is applied to all IIM's. Both IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore, for example, release individual criteria and evaluate candidates based on their respective admission processes.

6. Attend the Selection Rounds

Securing a seat in the shortlist lands you in the next round of the selection process. Institutes might hold a personal interview, written test, or both of these prior to the final selection.

7. Receive the Final Admission Decision

Final selection is decided only after those rounds are complete. Institutes may bring together CAT results, interview performance, and profile components according to their published policies.

8. Accept the Offer and Pay the Required Fee

If you receive an offer, complete the acceptance and payment formalities within the deadline set by that IIM. This concludes the process behind how to get into IIM for MBA.

Who Is Eligible for IIM Admission in 2027?

For CAT-based flagship MBA or PGP admission, the common eligibility baseline comes from the CAT 2026 eligibility rules. Applicants can qualify through a recognised bachelor’s degree, an accepted completed professional qualification, or final-year bachelor’s study. Individual IIMs may apply additional shortlisting conditions after this basic eligibility stage.

IIM MBA Eligibility at a Glance

Eligibility AreaRequirement for CAT-Based IIM Admission
Educational qualificationRecognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification
General, EWS and NC-OBCAt least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA
SC, ST and PwDAt least 45% marks or equivalent CGPA
Final-year bachelor’s studentsEligible to apply, subject to completing the degree within the prescribed admission timeline
Professional qualificationsCompleted CA, CS, ICWA/CMA or FIAI qualifications are recognised in the CAT application process
Work experienceNot required to be eligible for CAT-based two-year IIM programmes
Academic streamNo specific undergraduate stream is prescribed under the common CAT eligibility rule

Bachelor’s Degree and Minimum Marks

Applicants from recognised undergraduate disciplines can enter the CAT-based admission process. The common academic threshold is 50% or equivalent CGPA for General, EWS and NC-OBC candidates and 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
Where a university awards CGPA instead of percentages, conversion follows the method certified by that university or institution. The CAT registration guidance provides for percentage calculation where no institutional conversion formula exists.

Final-Year Students

Candidates still completing their bachelor’s degree can also apply. They enter the process using the marks available at the time of application. If selected, admission remains provisional until the required degree-completion documents are submitted within the deadline set for that cycle.

Professional Qualification Holders

CAT 2026 also recognises completed professional qualifications such as CA, CS, ICWA/CMA and FIAI. Candidates without a bachelor’s degree must have completed an accepted professional qualification before applying.

Work Experience and Freshers

Work experience is not part of the common CAT eligibility requirement. Fresh graduates can therefore apply for flagship two-year IIM programmes. Some IIMs may later award weight to professional experience during shortlisting or final selection, but that is a selection factor rather than a basic eligibility condition.

CAT 2026 for IIM Admission: What You Need to Know

CAT 2026 provides the test score used by IIMs for admission to their postgraduate management programs. The examination itself is common, but its role after the result is not. Each IIM decides how CAT performance enters its own shortlisting and final-selection process.

Why CAT 2026 Matters for 2027 Admission

CAT 2026 is the relevant examination for candidates targeting the next flagship MBA or PGP admission cycle. CAT scores can be used by IIMs for their postgraduate and fellow or doctorate programmes, subject to the admission policy of each institute.

CAT 2026 Exam Structure

CAT 2026 Fact Box

  • Mode: Computer-based test
  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Exam date: November 29, 2026
  • Sections: Three

The CAT exam for IIM admission covers:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
  • Quantitative Ability

CAT Score vs Percentile

A CAT score represents your test performance after the prescribed scoring and scaling process. A percentile places that performance relative to other test takers. IIM admission policies commonly refer to CAT percentiles, rather than treating the raw test score as the admission threshold.

Overall and Sectional Performance

A strong overall percentile cannot compensate automatically for every section. Individual IIMs may set separate minimum requirements for the overall CAT percentile and individual sections.

CAT Registration and IIM Program Selection

Apart from registering you for the examination, the CAT form also asks which IIM programs and institutes should consider your application. The CAT 2026 advertisement mentions that the registration fee remains a single payment, even when multiple institutes are selected.

What CAT Percentile Is Required for IIM Admission?

There is no single CAT cutoff for IIM admission. Each institute sets its own minimum overall and sectional percentile requirements, which can vary by programme, category, and admission stage.

Qualifying Cutoff vs Actual Shortlisting

The qualifying percentile is the minimum needed to enter an institute’s consideration pool. It is not necessarily the percentile at which interview calls stop. For example, IIM Calcutta explicitly notes that its actual section-wise and overall cutoffs may be considerably higher than its published minimums.

Overall vs Sectional Cutoffs

Where both apply, you need to clear:

  • The overall CAT percentile, and
  • The prescribed sectional cutoff in VARC, DILR, and QA.

Some institutes use a different model. IIM Rohtak currently publishes an aggregate CAT requirement without a separate sectional threshold, while IIM Shillong publishes sectional minimums without a separate overall minimum.

Why Meeting the Minimum Does Not Guarantee a Call

The published IIM CAT cutoff creates the eligible pool. Further shortlisting can then depend on the institute’s own scoring method and the number of candidates it intends to interview.

How Does the IIM Selection Process Work After CAT?

The IIM selection process does not use CAT as the only deciding factor. After the initial CAT screening, shortlisted applicants can be assessed through academics, work experience, diversity factors, written assessments and interviews. The mix changes from one IIM to another and can also change between shortlisting and final selection.

Stage 1: CAT and Preliminary Screening

The first screening stage decides whether your application is eligible to move ahead. The institute may review your CAT score, category status, and other basic conditions before doing so. It is not a merit ranking. Clearing this stage only means you remain under consideration.

Stage 2: Shortlisting for Interviews

This is where the CAT selection process becomes institute-specific. CAT performance may be combined with profile data to create a shortlist score.

For example:

  • IIM Ahmedabad’s 2026–28 shortlisting formula gives 65% weight to the normalised CAT score and 35% to the Application Rating.
  • IIM Bangalore’s 2026–28 pre-PI score uses CAT, Class 10, Class 12, bachelor’s performance, work experience or professional qualifications, and gender diversity.
  • IIM Calcutta’s 2026–28 shortlist assigns 56 points to CAT, 10 to Class 10, 15 to Class 12 and 4 to gender diversity.

The important point is that the IIM admission criteria can assess the same applicant differently across institutes.

Stage 3: WAT, AWT or Personal Interview

Shortlisted applicants then face the institute’s own assessment process. What that includes depends on the IIM concerned.

Possible components include:

  • Personal Interview (PI)
  • Writing Ability Test (WAT)
  • Analytical Writing Test (AWT)
  • A combination of interview and written assessment

IIM Ahmedabad currently conducts AWT and PI, while IIM Calcutta’s 2026–28 policy provides for WAT and PI.

Stage 4: Final Composite Score

After these assessments, the institute calculates an IIM composite score for final selection. The formula at this stage can differ substantially from the one used for interview shortlisting.

IIM Ahmedabad’s current final formula assigns 50% to PI, 10% to AWT, 25% to CAT and 15% to Application Rating. IIM Calcutta uses 30% CAT, 48% PI, 8% WAT, 6% academic diversity and 8% work experience for final selection.

Do Class 10 and 12 Marks Matter?

They can as their role depends on the institute and selection stage. IIM Calcutta, for example, includes both Class 10 and Class 12 scores in its current interview-shortlisting formula.

Does Graduation Performance Matter?

Graduation marks are not treated identically across IIMs. IIM Ahmedabad includes bachelor’s performance within its Application Rating framework and also groups applicants by academic discipline.

How Is Work Experience Considered?

Work experience can earn profile points, but the method differs. IIM Calcutta currently allows up to 8 points for eligible post-graduation work experience in its final selection score. Internships, apprenticeships and unpaid work are excluded under that policy.

Can Academic or Gender Diversity Affect Selection?

They can, where the published policy assigns them a role. To cite an example, IIM Calcutta currently gives up to 6 points for academic diversity at final selection, while IIM Bangalore includes 5 points for gender diversity in its pre-PI score.

Why Selection Criteria Differ Across IIMs

Each IIM publishes its own admission framework. The weight assigned to CAT, academics, experience, diversity and the IIM interview can therefore change by institute and by stage. Current policies are useful reference points, but the 2027–29 criteria should be checked once the respective IIMs publish them.

Do All IIMs Follow the Same Admission and Interview Process?

Admission interviews can be organized differently across the IIMs. Some institutes run the process themselves, and others participate in common interview arrangements. A joint interview stage does not remove institute-level differences from the final admission decision.

Individual IIM Admission Processes

Several IIMs publish and manage their own shortlisting, interview, and final-selection procedures. IIM Ahmedabad, for example, follows an institute-specific MBA admission framework. Applicants should check the policy of each target IIM rather than assume that one selection model applies across the system.

Joint or Common Interview Processes

Some institutes combine selected stages of the admission process.

For the 2026 cycle:

  • CAP 2026 includes IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, and IIM Sirmaur under a common Personal Interview process.
  • JAP 2026 covers IIM Kashipur, IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, and IIM Tiruchirappalli.

A common interview does not create a common final merit formula. Participating institutes can still apply different cutoffs, weights, and selection criteria.

What to Watch for in the 2027 Cycle

The participating institutes for the 2027–29 cycle should be taken from the official notification applicable to that cycle.

Candidates should verify:

  • Participating IIMs
  • Coordinating institute
  • Interview format
  • Registration procedure
  • Institute-specific final-selection rules

What the Published Fee May Include

IIM MBA fees are not identical across institutes. Depending on the IIM, the published amount may cover:

  • Tuition and academic services
  • Hostel accommodation
  • Study material and library access
  • Student or alumni activities
  • Technology and infrastructure charges

Charges That May Be Separate

Mess expenses, refundable deposits, medical insurance, and personal costs can fall outside the stated IIM course fees. IIM Bangalore, for example, lists a ₹30,000 mess advance for every term, whereas IIM Indore excludes mess expenses from its published course fee.

Offer Acceptance Fees

An admission offer may require an upfront payment, but this need not be an additional cost. At IIM Nagpur, ₹1 lakh paid while accepting the offer is adjusted against the programme fee. IIM Jammu similarly adjusts its ₹50,000 offer-acceptance amount against the first-term fee.

Financial Assistance and Scholarships

Fee support also differs by institute. IIM Bangalore, for instance, allows eligible PGP students to apply for need-based financial aid and also lists merit and category-linked scholarship schemes. IIM Amritsar separately publishes institute, corporate and need-based scholarship provisions.

What Documents Do You Need for IIM Admission?

Document requirements vary by institute, so candidates should follow the checklist issued by each shortlisted IIM.

Academic Documents

  • Class 10 marksheet or transcript
  • Class 12 marksheet or transcript
  • Bachelor’s degree transcripts
  • Degree or provisional degree certificate, where applicable

Where applicable, keep the required:

  • SC/ST certificate
  • NC-OBC certificate
  • EWS certificate
  • PwD certificate and UDID card

Professional Documents

Applicants claiming work experience may need:

  • Work-experience letters
  • First and last payslips

Final-Year Student Documents

Final-year applicants may need a bonafide or institution-issued certificate confirming their current academic status. IIM Ahmedabad also requires specified certification for candidates awaiting final results.

Institute-Specific Application Documents

Requirements can extend beyond certificates. IIM Bangalore currently requires:

  • A statement of purpose
  • Two online reference letters

The exact document list should be checked again when the 2027–29 admission instructions are released.

How to Get Into IIM After 12th?

Students after Class 12 do not enter the standard two-year postgraduate MBA directly. Some IIMs do offer integrated or undergraduate management programmes through separate admission routes. The required exam changes from one institute to another, so questions on how to get into IIM after 12th have no universal answer.

Integrated Programme Routes

Several IIMs currently offer five-year Integrated Programmes in Management. These combine undergraduate study with later management education, although the programme structure and degree award can differ by institute.

IIM Bodh GayaFive-Year IPMJIPMAT2026–31
IIM BangaloreBBA in Digital Business and EntrepreneurshipIIMB Entrance Test, CUET (UG) or JEE Main2026–29

IPMAT

IPMAT is not a common entrance examination used uniformly by every IIM. For the 2026–31 batch, IIM Indore conducted IPM AT 2026 on May 4, 2026 and listed a sanctioned domestic intake of 150 students.

The same score can also serve another institute. IIM Ranchi accepts the IPMAT 2026 score conducted by IIM Indore, then follows its own selection process.

JIPMAT and Other Official Routes

JIPMAT follows a separate admission path. The National Testing Agency conducts the examination for the five-year IPM programmes at IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya.

Undergraduate entry is not limited to IPMAT or JIPMAT. For its online BBA programme, IIM Bangalore accepts its own entrance test, CUET (UG) General Test, or JEE Main under the 2026 admission process.

How to Get Into IIM Without CAT?

CAT is the principal means available to domestic applicants seeking admission to the flagship two-year MBA/PGP at many IIMs. But it is not used for every IIM program. Some programs have their own entrance tests, while others accept exams such as GMAT or GRE. The important question is which IIM program you want to join and what that program accepts instead of CAT.

Undergraduate Programs

Students coming straight from Class 12 can look at the five-year Integrated Program in Management (IPM) offered by participating IIMs. IIM Indore, for example, conducts its own IPM Aptitude Test rather than using CAT for domestic applicants. The selection also includes a Personal Interview.

This is different from entering a regular two-year MBA. IPM combines undergraduate and management education, so it is an option for school graduates rather than a replacement for CAT at the postgraduate level.

Executive and Working-Professional Programs

Working professionals have other options open to them. Several IIM executive programs use tests other than CAT and also look closely at professional experience. IIM Calcutta's MBA for Executives, for instance, considers GMAT scores along with academic background, professional experience, the interview, statement of purpose, and recommendations.

IIM Bangalore's PGPEM is yet another example. Applicants can apply using CAT, GMAT, GRE, or the IIMB Test, depending on what they choose for their application.

GMAT, GRE or IIM-Specific Tests

Besides CAT, an IIM may also ask for a GMAT or GRE score instead, depending upon the course and the applicant. Some programs also have their own entrance test, so the requirement for a specific course needs to be checked.

All of this indicates that the question- how to get into IIM without CAT- has no single answer. Depending on the program you apply for, you may have to take a test and meet its eligibility and selection criteria.

What Should You Focus on If You Want to Get Into an IIM?

1. Protect Sectional CAT Performance

Don't ignore a section just because your overall mock score looks good. VARC, DILR, and QA can have separate cutoffs at IIMs, so try to keep all three reasonably strong.

2. Study Each Target IIM's Policy

The rules are different at different IIMs. Before you decide where you want to apply, look at how that institute weighs CAT, academics, work experience, and the interview. It can change how you approach your preparation.

3. Understand Your Existing Academic Profile

Before setting your targets, check your Class 10, Class 12, and graduation scores. If academics are already a strong part of your profile, great. If not, you may need to be more selective about where you apply.

4. Document Work Experience Properly

Keep the paperwork for your work experience handy for when you need it. If you are asked by an IIM to verify your employment details, you can use appointment letters, experience certificates, and payslips to account for it.

5. Prepare for Selection Rounds Early

CAT preparation can take up most of your attention, but don't leave everything else until the results are out. Read regularly, keep up with current affairs, and stay familiar with your graduation subjects. IIMs such as IIMA and IIMB also assess candidates beyond CAT.

If you are preparing for a CAT cycle after 2026, use the current policies to understand the selection framework, but recheck every cutoff, weightage, and admission rule when your target cycle's official policy is published.

In Summary

It takes more than just doing well in CAT to get into an IIM. Your academic record, the IIM you apply to, and your performance in the later rounds can all play a significant role. Students applying after Class 12 can explore eligible IPM programs, while graduates can take the CAT route for a regular two-year MBA. So, start by checking the course requirements and selection rules of the IIMs you have in mind. This makes how to get into IIM much easier to figure out.

FAQs

1. What are the eligibility criteria for applying to IIMs?
